Sylvia Brinton Perera boldly writes: "The patriarchal ego of both men and women, to earn its instinct-disciplining, striving, progressive, and heroic stance, has fled from the full-scale awe of the goddess. Or it has tried to slay her, or at least to dismember and thus depotentiate her." Perhaps this concept frolics about within our psyches, as Carl Gustav Jung conjectures that: "A myth is playing in your unconscious through the centuries in a continuous stream." How can we break this cycle for ourselves individually, this continual stripping away of the essence of the feminine? How can we release the imprisoned parts of ourselves, held captive, the power that has been neutralized? Is it even possible?
I believe, Inanna, the Sumerian Queen of Heaven and Earth can shake this part of us lose—both for men and women, re-entering the “feminine source-ground” (Perera).
In Myths with Murph, we’ll explore the ancient story from the third millennium B.C. as seen through the lens of Jungian analyst, Sylvia Brinton Perera's Descent to the Goddess: A Way of Initiation for Women (and men, too).
“We women who have succeeded in the world are usually 'daughters of the father'--that is well adapted to a masculine-oriented society--and have repudiated our own full feminine instincts and energy patterns, just as the culture has maimed or derogated most of them” (Perera).
Why look at myths from other cultures? Writers and poets have historically played with myths symbolically expressing conflict, emotions, and the establishment of setting. “Poetry, which in its highest form is animated by the same primordial images as myth, may disclose motifs and formulations which recapitulate mythical ones, and our mythological interpretation is gratifyingly confirmed when a poem strikes the same primordial note as resounds in the myth” (Neumann).
For twelve weeks for one-and-a-half hours each week, join Murphy utilizing Suzanne Kingsbury’s Gateless method, along with Terri Trespicio’s New Rules Guidelines. Step into the stillpoint within your body, write from your own wellspring, share in a safe, nurturing environment, deepen into the feminine, receive and offer feedback in a community that supports the art of craft and the wisdom of the piece, witnessing the transformation of the writer, as well as the listener.
