Come Write With Murphy On Fridays

Myths with Murph:

Descent to the Goddess

8 WEEK ZOOM MEETING SERIES
Fridays: May 29, June 5, 12, 19, 26, July 3, 10, 17
9 am to 10:15 am EST

Sylvia Brinton Perera boldly writes: "The patriarchal ego of both men and women, to earn its instinct-disciplining, striving, progressive, and heroic stance, has fled from the full-scale awe of the goddess. Or it has tried to slay her, or at least to dismember and thus depotentiate her." Perhaps this myth plays on in our psyches, as Carl Gustav Jung explains: "A myth is playing in your unconscious through the centuries in a continuous stream."

In Myths with Murph, explore the ancient story from the third millennium B.C. of the Sumerian Queen of Heaven and Earth, Inanna, as seen through the lens of Jungian analyst, Sylvia Brinton Perera's Descent to the Goddess: A Way of Initiation for Women

"The return to the goddess, for renewal in a feminine source-ground and spirit, is a vitally important aspect of modern woman's quest for wholeness. We women who have succeeded in the world are usually 'daughter of the father'--that is well adapted to a masculine-oriented society--and have repudiated our own full feminine instincts and energy patterns, just as the culture has maimed or derogated most of them. We need to return to and redeem to and redeem what the patriarchy has often seen only as a dangerous threat and called terrible mother, dragon, or witch."

Writers and poets have historically played with myths symbolically expressing conflict, emotions, and the establishment of setting. “Poetry, which in its highest form is animated by the same primordial images as myth, may disclose motifs and formulations which recapitulate mythical ones, and our mythological interpretation is gratifyingly confirmed when a poem strikes the same primordial note as resounds in the myth” (Neumann).
