Come Write With Murphy On Fridays

Myths with Murph:

The Egyptian Amduat

8 WEEK ZOOM MEETING SERIES
Fridays: April 3, 10, 17, 24, and May 1, 8, 17, 22
9 am to 10:15 am EST

In Collected Works, Carl Gustav Jung determined the myth is one of the most important requisites of life. Erich Neumann’s writings from Amor and Psyche: The Psychic Development of the Feminine explained, “Myth is always the unconscious representation of such crucial life situations, and […] so significant for us is that we can read the true experiences of mankind (womankind) in these confessions unobscured by consciousness.”

Otto Rank and Joseph Campbell called myths the collective dream of a whole people. If so, the myth itself expresses all the parts of society’s framework from the critic, to the politician, to the lover, to the teacher, to the change agent, to the challenged, to the parent, to the sibling, to the heroine, the hero.

Writers and poets have historically played with myths symbolically expressing conflict, emotions, and the establishment of setting. “Poetry, which in its highest form is animated by the same primordial images as myth, may disclose motifs and formulations which recapitulate mythical ones, and our mythological interpretation is gratifyingly confirmed when a poem strikes the same primordial note as resounds in the myth” (Neumann).

For eight Fridays, join Murphy utilizing Suzanne Kingsbury’s Gateless method, along with Terri Trespicio’s New Rules Guidelines and Principles. Step into the stillpoint within your body, your own wellspring. View images of the Amduat from the tomb of Pharoah Tuthmosis III, listening to the readings of short segments of Theodor Abt and Erik Hornung’s Knowledge for the Afterlife: The Egyptian Amduat—a Quest for Immortality, write from a prompt for 20 minutes. Three to four selected writers will read, while listeners share, affirm what they love, what works and the craft inside the piece via chat and personal feedback.

$35.00 per session (pay in advance, discounted price $250) After payment a Zoom link will be sent to your email.
