IML’s Beginnings
After the birth of her first book, Why Ostriches Don’t Fly and Other Tales from the African Bush, (Libraries Unlimited, 1997), I. Murphy Lewis felt the pleasures of a book in hand! Encouraged by her grandmother, she began her first venture in conjunction with Shank Painter, a republication from the 1928 original copper plates of Lysbeth Boyd Borie’s Poems for Peter, Murphy’s childhood favorite. In 2002, stimulated by the readings of the poet Gail Segal, heartened by her “angel” mother to continue, Murphy created IML Publications, LLC producing novels, poetry and film by various females and now, with indigenous authors (in conjunction with Global Voice Foundation), first introducing Segal’s poetry, In Gravity’s Pull (2002), and Gay Walley’s novel The Erotic Fire of the Unattainable: Aphorisms on Art, Love and the Vicissitudes of Life (2007), which resold to Skyhorse Publishing (2015). The Erotic Fire of the Unattainable successfully catapulted The Unattainable Story (2016) featured at Mostra, the São Paulo International Film Festival, acquiring Brazilian distribution Europa Films and Random Media at Cinequest in 2017, (IML is an Associate Producer); stimulating another film Erotic Fire of the Unattainable (2020) by Frank Vitale, written by Gay Walley. Sequestered during Covid and recognizing our success, (through the aid of more angel funders) in 2021, from the streets of Paris, IML Publications ambitiously launched Venus as She Ages a 6 novel collection spanning the lifetime of the writer Jacqueline Gay Walley. In 2024, IML, with wild acclaim, introduced Claudia Rosenhouse Raiken’s Messages from the Womb: Baby’s Talk Through Guided Visualizations Expanding Our Hearts and Minds; as well as Mahdi’s Khaak: The Message and I. Murphy Lewis’ Across the Divide to the Divine: An African Initiation. (In 2025, IML became a hybrid publisher.)
“Murphy is a wise doula who has courageously accompanied me on a profound journey into the depths of the psyche, helping me unearth hidden gems along the way. She is both a powerful catalyst and a compassionate sister, guiding the integration of my ancestral wounds with great tenderness and insight. Her work is rooted in an awareness of the social, historical, and collective threads that shape our stories, allowing for a deeper understanding of the whole. Murphy's rare ability to see, mirror, and encourage my healing and writing – through a psychological and archetypal lens – has awakened new levels of awareness and meaning in both myself and my creative work. l am forever grateful for her fearless. loving, and creative doula-ing presence.” – Jeannette Grace Sanford
